Residential Burn Permits

A Burn Permit is required to burn anywhere within the boundaries of Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue. This includes areas inside the City Limits of The Dalles and areas outside of the City.

NOTE: When obtaining a Residential Burn Permit with the online system, you will NOT receive a copy of a permit, however, you are expected to know and follow all regulations listed on the permit. There is no fee for a burn permit.  Should we respond to your location, our firefighters will be able to verify that you have a permit. If you do not have a current fire permit, your fire will be extinguished.

Permits are available online 24/7 by clicking the links below. Please follow all of the instructions.

Permits can also be obtained at the main fire station, during regular business hours, Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. 

Burning is allowed within the Fire District by Resolution 2008-16.  Burning within the City of The Dalles is approved by City Ordinance, Chapter 7.20 Burn Restrictions.

BURNING WITHIN THE CITY OF THE DALLES 

Open burning of yard debris shall be permitted on a seasonal basis. Seasons for open burning in the City of The Dalles is April 1st through May 14th, and October 16th through December 1st.

  • Burn Barrels are Prohibited within City Limits.
  • MCFR Burn Permit is Required.
  • City Codes Enformcement will investigate and inspect burning within the City Limits and may issue. citaions for non-compliance of City Code and/or MCFR Burn Permit regulations. Please follow all directions on the Burn Permit and listed in City Code to avoid conflict or fines.

BURNING WITHIN THE FIRE DISTRICT

Burn Bans may effect open burning dates. Please check to see if a Burn Ban is in place before conducting any outdoor burning.

General Burn Permit Regulations

1. No person shall conduct burning operations in an unguarded manner and/or without a permit.

2. All issued permits shall be valid from date issued until the following date of June 30th. (Resolution 2008-16)

3. All outdoor burning is prohibited during windy conditions (ORS 478.960)

4. All outdoor burning shall be conducted during daylight hours and extinguished by 11:00 AM, May 15th - Oct. 15th and at dusk during all other open periods.

5. No waste matter shall be burned, under permit or otherwise, which shall, in burning, cause or create a dense smoke or offensive odor. OREGON LAW PROHIBITS BURNING OF RUBBER PRODUCTS, TIRES, PLASTIC, WET GARBAGE, PETROLEUM AND PETROLEUMTREATED MATERIALS, ASPHALT AND INDUSTRIAL WASTE. (478.960; DEQ Regulations) The burning of many other common items including raw or untreated lumber, is prohibited in many locations and under a variety of circumstances. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to assure that all burning complies with state and local regulations.

6. The Fire Department may prohibit any and all open burning when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous. (ORS 478.960)

Open Burn Regulations

1. Open burning within the city limits is restricted to two burn periods: April 1 – May 14 and October 16 – December 1.

2. Piles shall be limited to 8 foot in diameter and 4 feet in height.

3. All open fires shall be constantly attended by a competent person until each fire is completely extinguished.

4. Attendant shall have fire extinguishing equipment readily available. (ORS 478.960)

5. The following minimum clearances shall be maintained at all times: a. 50 feet from any structure or combustible material if over 3 feet in diameter; b. 25 feet from any structure or combustible material if under 3 feet in diameter; c. 5 feet from any property line.

Permits are generally available at the fire station 1400 W 8th Monday through Friday 8 Am to 5 PM.

You must create a profile on this website. Once your profile is created, then you return to the Main Page of Community Connect and apply for a permit.

NOTE: When filling out the form for the permit, at the top of the page, in the "permit type" field, select Mid-Columbia FD Burn Permit. After reviewing the Burn Permit information, and about halfway down the page (just below Section 6) you must enter the date that you are applying for the permit.
